What a week for goodbyes: Battlestar Galactica, Edie on Desperate Housewives, President Obama's sunny relationship with the press. We can't help but grieve in a week like this, but it just makes us grateful for the things we know will never change: The sky is

still blue, the clouds come and go, Lost is confusing, and the Idol judges are babies.
During Scott MacIntyre's critique on American Idol, Paula gets so frustrated with Simon's immaturity that she pulls out a box of crayons and two

coloring books she happens to have on hand to keep the Brit busy. But Simon gets his revenge by drawing a mustache on Paula. Wait, isn't this a show about singing?
We believe The Office's Michael would start a rival paper company after quitting Dunder Mifflin last week — paper is all he knows, and he would

never let good sense and financial wisdom get in the way of a dream. But why oh why does Pam decide this week to quit Dunder and join him? Talk about Dunder-headed moves.
In its best episode in a long time, Heroes finally gives up the identity of the mysterious Rebel. And he's none other than... Micah, the obvious guess

from the beginning. We're not complaining about having Micah back (despite the fact that his growth spurt is a little alarming), but we wish the show had thrown in a few more red herrings.
Big Love's season finale packed plenty of punches (R.I.P., Roman!), but none with the emotional impact of Bill's solemn, symbolic ceremony to redefine

eternal salvation for his family. When his estranged wife, Nicki, crashes the bread-and-water party,tensions dissolve as she introduces her heretofore-unheard-of teenaged daughter.
Grey's Anatomy's Derek uses a series of CT scans from some of his early surgeries alongside Meredith to offer her the kind of "love in an

elevator" that lasts a lifetime. He never actually pops the question, and she never says yes, but when did they ever play by the rules? It is, for many, just what the doctor ordered.
After getting chummy with the 1977 version of Benjamin Linus — and allowing the lad to stage a jailbreak — Lost's Sayid fulfills his believed purpose by putting a bullet in young Ben's chest, presumably to stop him from becoming the man that makes the

castaways' lives hell years later. Slightly predictable? Maybe. Will it stick? Probably not. Still shocking? You bet.

Yes, the rumors of Edie Britt's imminent departure from Desperate Housewives swirled for months, but we never expected her to go

out like this. After escaping Dave's chokehold and crashing head-on into a light pole, she gets zapped by a downed power line. Edie always was a spark plug.
Battlestar Galactica's finale was filled with so many thrilling moments and emotional goodbyes, it's hard to pick just one moment. But we'll

go with Chief being treated to a flashback, revealing how fellow Cylon Tory murdered his wife by airlock. With a wild-eyed look of rage, he grabs her by the throat and chokes her to death. Payback is a motherfrakker.

Ratings: American Idol Is Red Hot

Wednesday's ratings recap:

8 pm/ET
American Idol's Motown Week kick-off averaged 25.6 million total viewers over its two-hour run, up 19 percent from last week's (Tuesday) sing-off and a 3 percent increase from the comparable night a year ago. A Survivor clip show placed a distant second with 8.15 mil.ABC's Scrubs (5.33 mil, -470K) and Better Off Ted (4.7 mil, down 16 percent) both dropped. Top Model (2.85 mil) plunged 21 percent but still beat out NBC's Chopping Block (which chopped off another 26 percent, hitting 2.6 mil).
9 pm
Criminal Minds came in second with 14 million viewers, gaining 520K week-to-week. Lost lost another 260 thou to set a new low of 8.82 mil. Life inched up a hair, to 4.32 mil.
10 pm
CSI: NY topped the hour with 12.6 million viewers, followed by Law & Order (7.25 mil, up 180K). The penultimate episode of Life on Mars (5.67 mil) gained 400 thou.

Does new role mean death for a Lost character?

One of Lost's cast members signs on for new show; but does new info on role signal death for the actor's character?An upcoming death in Lost is no secret--producers have never been shy about killing off even some of its most beloved faces (*sniff* Charlie *sniff*). Word leaked out earlier this month that the Reaper will once again swing his scythe in the direction of one character, and we may now have a hint. One of Lost's main characters has signed a deal to star in an upcoming show, which may signal that he/she will be gone from Lost forever after this season.

Family Guy producer talks Star Trek

The cast of the Next Generation joins this week's episode of Family Guy, what's in store for the Griffins?
This Sunday's episode of Family Guy, which takes shots at Star Trek conventions and features the guest appearance of the cast of Star Trek The Next Generation, is aiming to attract two groups of viewers. One will be the loyal fans of the animated hit,and the other will be the loyal fans of the sci-fi spin-off.
However, the majority will consider themselves fans of both, as Family Guy and sci-fi--for some reason or other--go together like martinis and talking dogs. Family Guy producer David A. Goodman considers himself to be a hardcore "Trekkie" and sees no problem lampooning one of his favorite properties.
"I think it's easy to mock things that take themselves too seriously," Goodman said on a conference call with the media today. "Star Trek is both wonderful and pompous at the same time [laughs]. I am a die-hard Trekkie, but there are moments in a Star Trek where it takes itself very seriously."
So the only thing to do was cut it down to size…Family Guy style. Goodman notes that plenty of shows have poked fun at the original Star Trek (Goodman himself wrote the episode of Futurama in which Fry recreates Star Trek with the heads of the original cast members), but few have taken on The Next Generation.
In the episode, the Griffins head to a Star Trek convention, but when Stewie doesn't get to ask his fan question during the Next Generation panel, he devises a plan to kidnap the cast: buy a transporter and beam them back to the house.
While most of the attention has been put on the Star Trek storyline, the episode's A-story involves a God-finding Meg and atheist Brian butting heads over religion--a controversial topic not unfamiliar to Family Guy.

Is One Tree Hill dumping Chad Michael Murray?

Amateur video captures One Tree's Lucas Scott saying he won't be back because show wants to "save money." Chad Michael Murray... concerned.There have been rumors around the Web that Chad Michael Murray is leaving the CW's One Tree Hill for good at the conclusion of the season, much to the chagrin of the show's fans. Last month, fan site One Tree Hill Fans.com cited sources who say Murray has not renewed his contract with the drama, and wants to move on for personal and professional reasons.
Now it looks like there may be more to the story. Murray is apparently on his way out, but not on his own accord.

Will young Lily be hanging out with young Kirsten and Jimmy?

New Gossip Girl mag cover is extra scandalous.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage may still be in the early stages of developing their Gossip Girl prequel, but they've got some interesting ideas they're floating around. The latest rumor to come from Camp Schwartz says that the lead character may be having a run in with characters from another Schwartz show.
The Gossip Girl spinoff, which we'll get a peek at during the May 11 episode of Gossip Girl, is set in the 1980s and will follow young Lily van der Woodsen as she sows her oats in Valley-Girl-era Los Angeles. According to EW.com, Schwartz and Savage are thinking about having young Lily mix it up with young versions of Kirsten Nichol and Jimmy Cooper from Schwartz's other teen drama, The O.C..
In other Gossip Girl news, the show may not get the ratings its hype would leave you to believe (even President Obama name-dropped the show during a recent speech), but that won't stop the hype from coming.

Ratings: All-Time Low Harshes Lost's Mellow

Fox's Lie to Me led the pack with an audience of 10.03 million total viewers, down 10 percent from its week-ago time-period premiere. CBS' sitcoms combined for second, though both Old Christine (7.37 mil, down 260K) and Gary (7.57 mil, down 140K) dipped a bit.
Placing third was ABC's Scrubs (5.8 mil) and lead-out Better Off Ted (which premiered to 5.64 mil). Top Model (3.6 mil) tumbled 19 percent yet still bested NBC's rotting Chopping Block (3.46 mil).
9 pm
American Idol's results show delivered 23 million viewers, slipping 7 percent week-to-week. Criminal Minds followed with 13.5 mil, down a half mil. Lost's numbers weren't terribly groovy, dropping 14 percent to an all-time low of 9.08 mil. (Next week, Sawyer & Co. face an even tougher hurdle: Idol's Obama-cized, two-hour performance show!) Life also took a plunge, to 4.22 mil.
10 pm
CSI: NY won the hour with 12.7 million viewers (down 800K), followed by Law & Order (7.07 mil, down 530K). Life on Mars showed some life, surging 15 percent to 5.27 mil.

Two CBS comedies get big renewals

The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men got big bangin' deals for an average of two-and-a-half seasons. The news is a bit anticlimactic, as it was previously reported that creator Chuck Lorre let the good news spill to his crew a while back.
The numbers break down as follows: Two and a Half Men, currently in its sixth season, will now air through the 2011-2012 season--taking it to a guaranteed ninth season (barring any unforeseen difficulties). The Big Bang Theory, currently in its second season, has been renewed through the 2010-2011 season, guaranteeing a fourth season of the new hit.
Both shows are two of the biggest comedies on television and anchor CBS' Monday night comedy block, which also includes How I Met Your Mother and a rotating fourth Musketeer (HIMYM hasn't yet been renewed for a fifth season).

ABC picks end to Lost's season, others

Season five of lost, Grey's Anatomy conclude in mid-May; Bachelorette, Ugly Betty returns also set.
It's time to get out your red pen and mark your calendars, because ABC has announced the finale dates of its lineup, including the season finales of lost and Grey's Anatomy, and possibly the series finales of Scrubs and… According to Jim.

The first days to get the red ink should be May 13 and May 14--make sure you keep those days open and reserve the couch in your livingroom. lost will end its fifth season with a two-hour finale on May 13 and Grey's Anatomy will also wrap up its fifth cycle on May 14. Both should feature some major shockers; the rumors I'm hearing about the Lost character getting killed off this season even shock me, and Grey's has to decide what to do with Izzy/Katherine.

For Scrubs fans, May 6 will be a somber trip to the television morgue. Most of the principal cast is calling this season their last (Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Judy Reyes, creator Bill Lawrence), and most believe that means the end of Scrubs. Looks like one and done on ABC for the hospital comedy.
Ugly Betty returns from its abrupt break on May 7, and will end its season on May 21. The Bachelorette will also kick off its latest cycle on May 18… what surprises will producers have for us this time?

SG Atlantis

The Stargate is closing for good...on television anyway. Sci Fi Channel today quietly revealed that Stargate Atlantiswould not be renewing the show for a sixth season and that season five, currently airing, would be its last.
Stargate Atlantis is a spin-off of Stargate SG-1, which ran for 10 years on both Showtime and Sci Fi beginning in 1997. Atlantis began airing in 2004, and will conclude with its 100th episode in January 2009.
Atlantis built on the successful science-fiction franchise created by the 1994 MGM film Stargate, and follows a crew of explorers who travel to a far off galaxy to learn about the lost city of Atlantis.
The show won't simply blink out of existence, however. The show's cancellation came in a press release revealing that a Stargate Atlantis movie is in the works. Following in the bootprints of fellow fare such as Battlestar Galacticaand SG-1

Purity Rings, Reunions and Revenge

Things took a turn for the serious this week, even on Comedy Central: South Park accused Disney of using the Jonas Brothers to sell sex to young girls. Jon Stewart blamed CNBC for contributing to the country's financial woes. Good thing 30 Rock unveiled the Funcooker — we've been starving for good times.
Countless characters disappear to unseen car accidents or trips to college, so props to Friday Night Lights for giving paraplegic former Panther quarterback Jason Street a touching and realistic exit from the series. Even tough-guy Riggins can't keep the tears out of his eyes as Jason tells Erin he's secured a job as a junior sports agent and is ready to provide for her and their son Noah. Touchdown.
Kenny and his new girlfriend begin wearing purity rings after attending a Jonas Brothers show — and soon find themselves hanging out with other sexless couples, discussing Grey's Anatomy. "A ring that says you'll be together but not have sex,"one confused character says. "Isn't that called a wedding ring?"
30 Rock's conclusion includes: Dr. Spaceman trying to force a bear-costumed Jenna's head onto the coffee table so she'll sleep, because if she doesn't, she'll die from her addiction to military-strength amphetamine; a cut to Tracy Jordan's commercial, where he displays his Funcooker; and Liz almost burning the place down. Why does this qualify as a "moment"?Because it all happens in a matter of seconds.
Skipping any "remember the good old days?" moments, George Clooney and Julianna Margulies make a low-key return to ER to convince a grieving woman (guest star Susan Sarandon) to donate her brain-dead grandson's organs.

End of Stargate Atlantis

Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis was the last series. Stargate Universe will replace it in the near future with Actor Robert Carlyle taking the lead role.
Like all great series, eventually they run out of energy and have to make way for new concepts. I suspect that like Startrek generations, Stargate and Stargate Atlantis will go on forever simply because they represent brilliant story telling and push the boundaries of the imagination. Strangely these Sci-Fi series have a way of creating their own virtual world that draws you in.
There is some excellent TV shows at the moment (24 & Damages) that suck you into their virtual world and have the power to surprise and make you think.

McCarthy Is Gossip Girl's Dad, Vampire Casts Lead

Not that Lipstick Jungle fans needed Sign No. 73 that the NBC sudser isn't returning, Andrew McCarthy has been cast in Lily, the CW's tentatively titled Gossip Girl prequel spinoff, says the Hollywood Reporter. McCarthy will play no less than teenage Lily Rhodes' father, Rick, who is a music biz exec.Starring as Lily is American Dreams girl Brittany Snow.Also on board for the spinoff is One Tree Hill alum Matt Barr, as Keith van der Woodsen, a love interest of Lily's. Late Night, Lost and Bachelor Threesomes

What a week for threesomes. Jimmy Fallon joined Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Kimmel in late night, Freckles returned to the Lost island, where Sawyer and Juliet have paired off, and The Bachelor fell in love with two women. Sort of.

Idol Would Do Anything for Love

American Idol averaged 24 21 million total viewers, matching last week's sing-off. Placing third behind a not-new NCIS(13.7 mil), The Biggest Lost weighed in with nearly 9 mil over its two-hour run, dropping 700K week-to-week.The CW's Reaper returned to an audience of 2.36 mil, down 330 thou from its May 2008 freshman finale.
A repeat of The Mentalist played also-ran to Idol, delivering 12.76 million viewers.10 pmThe Bachelor: After the Final Rose — Part 2: ABC Likes Ratings made a date with 10.85 million viewers. That was just enough to best a Without a Trace repeat (10.5 mil) and top the hour.

Hot Numbers! Terminator and Dollhouse Get Big Boosts from DVR

Summer Glau and Eliza Dushku are turning a lot more heads than evidenced by the next-day Nielsens.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, in fact, is currently enjoying the biggest boost of any network show — a 36 percent jump in adult demos — from Live+7 DVR data, which factors in playback within the first week after a program airs.
Rounding out the top five beneficiaries of Live+7 DVR data are 90210 (gaining 33 percent), Scrubs (30 percent) and the CW's Privileged (29 percent).
Of course, the big hurdle for networks such as Fox is getting advertisers to appreciate the value of Live+7 playback and not assume that viewers are "zapping" commercials. For example, the Eliza Dushku/Hulu ad? I could watch it forever.

Damages Star Feels Trauma, Pope's Still Popular

We said, "Give this star a show," and they gave her one. Anastasia Griffith (aka Ellen's sis-in-law on Damages) has scored a gig on Trauma, NBC's drama pilot about first-response paramedics. Griffith will play an EMT whose paramedic beau died in a helicopter crash, says the Hollywood Reporter. (Fun and random fact: The London-bred Griffith is the real-life sis of Battlestar star Jamie Bamber!)
Previously cast on Trauma were Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher) and Jamey Sheridan (Law & Order: CI).
In other Peacock pilot casting news, Carly Pope has joined the ensemble of Day One, a drama revolving around neighbors in an apartment complex following a catastrophic event. Pope will play a brilliant young woman who lives with her computer genius boyfriend (Adam Campbell). Recently, the Popular alumna had a short-lived role on the current season of 24, playing the murdered first son's doomed sweetheart.

ER Finale Admits Gilmore Girl Alexis Bledel

TV's former Gilmore Girls, Alexis Bledel, will return to the smaller screen as a guest star in the two-hour ER series finale,airing April 2 Bledel will trade in her Traveling Pants for scrubs, playing Dr. Julia Wise, a new intern at County General, says People.
Other "names" on board for ER's series-ending salvo include George Clooney and Julianna Margulies (reprising their roles as Doug and Carol), and Susan Sarandon (playing a patient's grandmother), all three of whom will turn up in the March 12 episode.
